COLORADO DESERVES COLORADO-GROWN BAIT.

Colorado is a world-class leader in natural resource management, but a significant biosecurity gap remains. Every year, 15 million live baitfish are imported from out-of-state, representing 15,000,000 annual opportunities for pathogens and invasive species to enter our lakes and rivers.

  • Currently, the Western Slope is shielded from these imported risks. We believe the entire state deserves that same level of protection.

  • Out-of-state bait shipments have historically been a primary pathway for invasive species and pathogens to reach Colorado waters.

  • While some testing exists, the industrial scale of these imports makes effective screening nearly impossible.

CPW staff are currently considering "more inspections" for imports. But you cannot effectively inspect 15 million fish arriving at all hours of the night. The only certain solution is to transition to a 100% Colorado-Grown bait model. This move supports rural Colorado businesses while ensuring our world-class fisheries are protected by Colorado’s own gold-standard oversight.

Help us urge the Commission to phase out out-of-state imports and secure the future of our waters.
